5 awesome hacks to deep clean a house with pets

by Jessica Britt

I love a clean and tidy home as much I love my white fluffy cat which is snuggled in my lap at this very moment and my 10 years old German Shepherd which is calmly drooling on my sofa.

Having a clean house and pets should be elevated to the status of Art. I am no artist whatsoever, but I’ve learned some tricks to keep my apartment fresh and my fur babies happy.

Curious to find out how to keep a clean home and let your pets run free all at the same time? Keep reading this.

1. Focus on the floors and carpets. I don’t know about you, but when I start cleaning the house, my focus is likely more on those highly-touched surfaces such as kitchen cabinets, tables, shelves. My floors, on the other hand, receive a quick sweep and mop, without much attention. What if I told you that the floors and the carpets are likely one of the dirtiest surfaces in your house? Especially when you have a cat that loves to lay down on your carpet and a dog that drools on your hardwood floor.

Even if you are a devoted cleaner in every other area of your house, if your floors and rugs aren’t clean, your efforts to keep a fresh smelling house are essentially useless. When cleaning the floors, keep in mind that your furry friends are always touching these surfaces, so use gentle and harmless cleaning products, such as  Angry Orange, which are effective against the nastiest smells and safe to use around pets. They work wonders on all kinds of surfaces, I even used them in my back yard. If you want a fresh house, you should have a daily floor cleaning routine to make sure the paw prints, mud or any other source of dirt or smell is gone for good.

Extra-tip: keep an absorbent towel in the hallway so you can clean those muddy paws before your pets come into the house.

You’ll see the difference once you start paying special attention to your floors.

2. Use rubber gloves to catch pet hair. Shedding is inevitable, but there are ways to reduce hair around your house. Want to easily de-fur your sofa, the carpets, or even your clothes? Put on a pair of rubber gloves and sweep the area with your hands. The fur will instantly stick to the gloves and once you’re done, just dip them in water and the hair will come off. Over the years, I’ve tried different methods to get rid of the pet hair, such as lint rollers, special accessories for the vacuum cleaner, all sorts of brushes, but the rubber gloves worked best for me.

3. Clean all the items your pet uses. Pet toys, food, and water bowls, collars, leashes can harbor bacteria and germs. In fact, various studies have shown that pet food bowls are among the dirtiest items in a house and they should be cleaned daily with hot water. And so are the toys, which can easily become a source of coliform bacteria, yeast, and mold. Wash the toys regularly with hot water and mild soap, or simply put them in the washing machine for a sanitizing cycle.

Collars also need to be washed thoroughly to get rid of odor and germs. You can simply soak the collar in hot water for about 20 minutes with a few drops of dog shampoo.

4. Purify the indoor air to get rid the pet odors. Keeping your home smelling fresh is a bit of a challenge when you are sharing your house with pets. Regardless of how well you groom them and how often you clean the house, there is sometimes a nasty and persistent odor that’s difficult to eliminate.

The good news is some plants help to improve indoor air quality and create a healthy living space for you and your pets. Besides being effective in filtering harmful toxins and pollutants from the air, they will also make your home look lovely.

Nevertheless, you should be aware because only a few of the top air-purifying plants are safe for animals. You might want to take a look at this article, where we talked about pet-safe plants.

5. Be prepared for accidents. When you have pets, there are definitely going to be times when they have“accidents” around the house that you’ll have to deal with. You need to get those messes cleaned up right away, so make sure you keep close at hand a towel and an effective multi purpose enzyme cleaner. Angry Orange Pet Stain & Odor remover is the best weapon in these situations, because it completely neutralizes bad smells, thanks to the powerful enzyme ingredients that attack and eliminate all stains from fabric & hard surfaces alike.

So those are my tips for keeping up with all the fun messes our pets leave behind. But do you know what else they leave behind? A lot of joy, love, and compassion, so it’s worth the effort, right?
