8 foods to avoid like fire

by Jessica Britt

It’s impossible for me to have a peaceful lunch in the kitchen, without a certain furry someone showing up its cute pinkish ears and starting to beg for food. I dunno how your pet is, but my cat is the biggest beggar on this planet.

One sniff of food and he comes running after me and assuming that “Puss in boots”, wide-eyed, long-faced, begging attitude that does funny things to my heart. And when he also meows and pats me with his little paw, just to make sure I understand what he wants, I’m gone for good. Kaput. I’m putty in his little paws.

But, I’m well aware that not all foods that are ok for us humans, are ok for our furry friends too, and that’s why I abstain from caving in and giving him the food he’s begging for. If your pup or kitten is just as much an emotional charlatan like mine is, then you should be fully aware of what foods are toxic to them, so let’s take a look:

1. Chocolate

This yummy, velvety goodness we humans enjoy so much is the biggest No. 1 No-No for our cute companions. All chocolate types are dangerous for your cat or dog, but as a general rule, the darker the chocolate, the more poisonous it is for them. Chocolate poisoning can cause your pet to vomit, have diarrhea and in extreme cases it can cause heart problems, tremors, seizures and it can even lead to death

2. Milk and Dairy

Let’s shatter once and for all the myth about cats loving milk. While they might actually love the taste (I haven’t yet met a cat that says no to a milk bowl), it’s actually bad for them. Cats don’t have the enzyme to process cow milk, so there’s a strong change that your fluffy kitty will feel sick afterwards! The same goes for doggos, their stomach isn’t prepared to process milk either.

3. Avocado

Better keep your pup away from that guacamole! If you don’t want Mexican Thursday to turn into disaster, make sure your curious amigo doesn’t eat any leftovers from the table, especially anything containing avocado. It can lead to throwing up and diarrhea.

4. Grapes and Raisins

Both grapes and raisins can cause serious damage to your cat or dog, as they can induce kidney failure. Make sure you keep them out of their reach at all times.

5. Onion and Garlic

The problem with onions and garlic is that they can cause anemia in your pet, by killing red blood cells. If you sense that they are unwell, weak and having breathing problems and you suspect that they might have eaten onions, contact a vet right away.

6. Coffee

The beverage that is essential to our lives and helps us function as adults is extremely toxic, both for cats and dogs. Caffeine poisoning can have the following symptoms: restlessness, rapid breathing, heart palpitations and muscle tremors. In large quantities, it can be fatal so make sure your pet stays clear of your morning cappuccino.

7. Alcohol

Guess what? Alcohol does the same to your pet’s liver or brain, as it does to you. But, while you might be able to enjoy one too many Margaritas, both cats and dogs have a very low tolerance level and even a bit of alcohol can create damage.

8. Raw eggs, Raw meat & Bones

Your furry friend can get seriously sick if he or she eats any type of raw meat, raw eggs or bones. Both dogs and cats can get Salmonella or E.coli from raw meat, just like us. Raw eggs can cause skin and fur problems, while bones might injure their digestive tract or make them choke.

What other foods do you avoid giving your pet at all costs?
